The Danube University Krems inGOV team organised a workshop on Friday, 26 November 2021 under the aegis of the GovCamp Vienna 2021 conference to explore the issue of sustainability pertaining to the co-creation of inclusive public services in the Austrian context. The interactive session saw ten participants – mainly digital government practitioners and technology enthusiasts – critically explore the interconnected concepts of sustainability in the public sector, the sustainability of digital services, and the sustainable impact of co-creation and co-created services on policy. The session hosts, Shefali Virkar and Lucy Temple, used current results from the inGOV project to inform the discussion. The main questions guiding proceedings were:
- How can the concept of sustainability be defined in the public sector context?
- What are the factors that facilitate or inhibit sustained outcomes of co-creation initiatives?
- And how can we ensure that co-created outcomes are sustained beyond a specific project or initiative?
Several attendees drew on their own experiences with the application of new technologies in government to generate key insights on the prospects for the development of sustainable digital public services in Austria. In particular, the importance of identifying stakeholders at a very early stage was highlighted, so as to more deeply involve them in processes of co-creation. This, it was felt, would contribute significantly to the long-term sustainability of digital public service design and delivery.
